Our cryogenics equipment was front and center in a photo from Brookhaven National Laboratories. The researchers pictured are part of the Center for Functional Nanomaterials. They are using ambient-pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy equipment to test nanocages, a silicon & oxygen material that can trap argon, krypton, and xenon.
Until now only tiny nanocages trap minute amounts of gas in the lab. If this process could scale up, it could make nuclear power more efficient and safer by trapping gases that result from nuclear fission. Another use for the technology could be to capture xenon and krypton gases more efficiently.
Scientists hope to make a large version using commercially available materials and trap noble gases at scale.
